Anime: Episode 24
Soi Fon is a small woman with black hair. She wears the traditional Captain's uniform, the only difference being her yellow obi tied around her waist. Under her Captain's uniform, Soi Fon wears the uniform of the leader of the Onmitsukidō, it has no sleeves but she wears black arm bands and the costume has no back to it. Unlike most Shinigami, Soi Fon doesn't wear tabi with her sandals instead replacing them with plain white socks.
Soi Fon is a hard worker and strongly believes in following orders. She is generally reserved and has a completely different personality to her lieutenant who is arrogant, fat and greedy. Unlike most captains she doesn't seem to show any sort of compassion to any of her subordinate, as she believes that personal struggle builds character. Soi Fon, like most popular female shinigami is a member of the Shinigami Women's Association.
One of Soifon's more amusing characteristics is that she seems obsessed with Yoruichi, her mentor and predecessor, it has shown sometimes she still thinks about when they trained/fought together and practiced Shunpo. She seems to love anything to do with a black cat, a form Yoruichi can take at will. In the anime's Shinigami Golden Cup chapter, Rangiku Matsumoto gives Soi Fon a black cat plushie doll after returing from the human world. In another special Valentine's segment, she tried and failed to give Yoruichi a heart shaped box of chocolates.
Soi Fon doesn't ever hesitate to do what is needed in order to complete a mission and defeat her opponent, this being shown when she fights the Segunda Espada Barragan Luisenbarn, when she was exposed to an attack and ordered her Lieutenant to cut off her arm with hesitation. Despite her cold demeanor towards him, she seemingly has a certain level of faith in him, shown when she trusts him to distract their opponent so she can carry out her plan. Soi Fon rarely shows any emotion whilst on the battlefield, except during her fight with Yoruichi. Her stubborn attitude does not seem to improve over time, still showing a large amount of dislike to Kisuke Urahara, possibly because Yoruichi used to tease her about him or that she still blames him for Yoruichi's abandonment, 100 years previously. This is shown the most when she makes a deal with Hachigen Ushōda, she promises to use her Bankai to help him so long as he imprisons him in one of his special barriers for a month.
Soi Fon was born Shaolin Fon into the Fon house, a lesser noble house affiliated with the Shihōin noble house. She was the youngest of six siblings in her family therefore, as tradition goes, she joined the Onmitsukidō. When she joinded she dropped her given name Shaolin Fon and took upon a new name, Soi Fon. She is the longest lasting out of the 6, two died on their first mission, two on the second and the last died on their sixth mission.
After serving for 8 years, she was transferred to Yoruichi Shihōin's personal guard, the militia's corps-commander. From there she became Yoruichi's protégée, and they developed a close relationship.
110 years prior to the current storyline, Soi Fon is head of Yoruichi's guard and very protective of both her and her honour. She kept a grudge againt Kisuke Urahara and when she found out Yoruichi planned to suggest him for the vacant captain spot she strongly objected as she thought he was too lazy and bad at what he did. After Soi Fon tells Yoruichi that Kisuke is undeserving of the Captain position Yoruichi admits that Kisuke isn't really a hard worker, she dismisses Soi Fon's criticisms and jokingly insinuated that she must have romantic feelings for him, Soi Fon goes on to deny it and stalks off. She spends the following day following Kisuke around Soul Society taking down notes of what he does, she returns to the 2nd Division barracks to show Yoruichi her notes that show what she believes as evidence he is not suitable for the job. Upon arriving there Soi Fon find Urahara already there talking to Yoruichi, they then tell her that Urahara will infact be taking the captain proficiency exam. Yoruichi tell Soi Fon that special arrangements have been taken so that Soi Fon may attend the examination, confused Soi Fon asks why she should attend, to which Yoruichi replies that there is no need to keep secrets as she knows Soi Fon is attracted to Urahara, Soi Fon denies it but Yoruichi states that she knows all about Soi Fon's day and how she has been following him around. Soi Fon denies that she is attracted to Urarhara and tells Yoruichi that she was indeed following him around but only to prove how lazy and unsuited to the job he is. Urahara does not deny any of it and Yoruichi comments on how well Soi Fon did and how detailed it is. At first Soi Fon is happy untill she realises that Yoruichi doesn't see the note as what it is, she see's it as more of a love letter. They are then interrupted by a squad member who tells the group that the people Urahara have been looking for have been found, Soi Fon comments on if Urahara doesn't return in time or his exam, not only will it make him look bad, it will make both the 2nd Squad and Yoruichi look bad. Yoruichi dismisses the claim and tells Urahara to head out and telling Soi Fon to help prepare for his emam. She follows Urahra and his men to an area where Shinigami defectors are being hidden and watches as Urahara enters the building alone and, using Hakuda alone single handedly defeats them all. That is the first time she bore witness to his advanced spiritual pressure.
Shortly after he becomes the 12th Division Captain, a member from the Onmitsukidō informs Yoruichi that Urahara has enetered into the Detention Unit proerty with claims he had been given approval to be there. Although she doesn't remember giving him approval, when asked if they should remove him, she tells her division members not to bother and to let him go where he pleases. Soi Fon asks her if she has any memory of it, to which Yoruichi plainly says no. As Soi Fon starts to object, Yoruichi tells her to calm down telling her it is Kisuke they're talking about and he must have some sort of idea.
9 years after that Yoruichi leaves the Soul Society to assist her now exiled friend Uarahara, abondoning her Captains position and head of the Onmitsukidō, along with her other titles. Soi Fon saw this as betrayal that she had abandoned her, especially under the circumstances. Because of that she trained herself to surpass her former mentor and eventually took the titles she abandoned. She ultimately unified the Onmitsukidō as well as the Punishment Force after Yoruichi disappeared.
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Being the leader of the Onmitsukidō, she is obviously strongly trained in hand-to-hand combat. She had been training like that since she joined the Onmitsukidō. It is probable that she is the most proficient hand-to-hand fighter in all of Soul Society, Yoruichi likely being superior to her.
Flash Step Master: As the leader of the Onmitsukidō, she is expected to be very proficient in [Flash Steps]. She uses her mastery of Shunpo techniques to be a threat both far away and in close combat, making the task of landing a hit on her near impossible if not for the most advanced fighters. Her movements are that fast that few people would be able to see her attack. In her fight with Yoruichi, she was shown to almost keep up with her mentor, managing to hit her with Nigenki Kessatsu, after that she never hit her again as Yoruichi was faster.
Master Swordsmanship: Soi Fon is a master when it comes to swordsmanship, although she usually only attacks using her Zanpakuto when she fights an opponent with a weapon drawn. Her fighting style is unique as she holds her blade horizontally with it alongside her arm in a reversed grip. She uses the blade like a large dagger, a different style to most fighters. All of her strikes are formed by her sweeping her arm as though throwing a punch. She also blocks in the same manner. She can also fight in the normal style masterfully, giving her an edge over most swordsman.
Master Tactician: As commander of the Onmitsukidō and Captain of the 2nd Squad, Soi Fon needs to be a good leader. She has shown an innate skill to decide which actions should be made in a battle. The tactics she does use are based on confusion and subterfuge. One of her main tactics is to gauge the enemies strengths and weaknesses in the middle of combat and them to her advantage. She has shown to place her opponents into a false sense of security, letting them underestimate her abilities.
Master Assassin: As the leader of the Onmitsukidō, Soi Fon is likely the most skilled Assassin in Soul Society. She has shown to be a master at satying hidden. Using Flash Steps, she is able to disable opponents without them seeing her or having any idea. She used that techinque to temporarily sneak up on Aizen and capture him before his escape. Throughout her life she has developed a resistance to nearly all know poisons, with the possible exception being Mayuri Kurotsuchi's, who's poison's are ever changing.
Kido Expert: As Captain of the 2nd Division and the Commander of the Onmitsukidō Soi Fon is well versed in the art of Kido, although she prefers to use hand-to-hand combat with the use of Shunpo. She has shown to be able to mix Kido with her hand-to-hand techniques.
Shunkō (瞬閧, Flash Cry): A technique known only to Yoruichi and Soi Fon. It is an advanced technique that combines the usage of Kido and hand-to-hand combat, it works by surrounding her back and arms with pressurized Kido. The uniform she wears underneath her Captains robe has no back or sleeves because they would rip apart when she activates it. Unlike Yoruichi, Soi Fon's version of this technique is incomplete and possibly unstable, which gives it room to improve.
Enhanced Strength: Soi Fon, although small in build, has shown to be able to match bigger foes in battle, at one point easily overcoming someone four times her height. She has shown herself capable of lifting large slabs of concrete debris that she was buried under with little or no effort.
Suzumebachi (雀蜂, ; Hornet): In it's sealed form is resembles something of a Wakizashi, donning a yellow hilt, something that is similar to that of a Japanese dao. Unlike other Soifon, Soifon keeps it sheathed horizontally across her back, kept in place by a rope.
- Shikai: It's release command is "Sting all enemies to death" (尽敵螫殺, Jinteki Shakusetsu), Soifon holds the sword with her right hand as it glows with a white light and shrinks around the middle finger and wrist of her right hand. As the glow fades we can see that Suzumebachi is a gauntlet coloured yellow and black connected to a "stinger" on her middle finger via a chain. The name Suzumebachi could thus refer to the Japanese Giant Hornet. The stinger type weapon that homes on Soifon's middle finger is almost twice the length of her normal finger length, slightly increasing her striking distance. In this form she is still capable of blocking forthcoming attacks with efficiency, and can do so with both the stinger and gauntlet parts alike.
- Shikai Special Ability: Nigeki Kessatsu (弐撃決殺, death in two steps): The first step consists of a simple jabbing motion in which the stinger not only causes a deep wound, but also leaves behind a butterfly shaped mark, with the centre emanating from the wound out. This first step is called Hōmonka (蜂紋華, hornet's crest; Viz "Bee Crest Flower"), this "marking" then becomes the stronghold for the next attack. Soifon uses this marking as a marker for where she has to attack next. If the same spot is struck for a second time the person will ultimately illustrate "Death in Two Steps" and death is guaranteed. When this ability takes effect (after the second attack is administrated) a larger Butterfly shaped marking emerges from the two previous marks, totally annihilating the victim's body. Although tattoo in appearance, they can not be removed in a similar fashion; the only way these marking can be removed and their effects nullified is if Soifon wills it to do so. When Yoruichi was still in control of the Onmitsukidō, she could only maintain these marking for a limited time of half an hour. The reasoning behind this attacks derives from the surface contact made as opposed to point of entry. The entire reason this method exists is because of the poison that Suzumebachi is able to secrete. The moment it enters the body it can spread through the body in a matter of minutes, or even seconds., destroying the person without a trace. This effect can take longer to kill the foe if they have a high Spiritual Energy.
- Counter-Poison: If Soifon were to become poisened (although it is undetermined if it works with all poisons or if they only work withcertain ones) she can use the poison from Suzumebachi to counter the poison she has been tainted with.
